4/29/08 NEWS:
QUARRY APPLICATION WITHDRAWN!
On 4/29 we received news from the Gilroy Dispatch that the developers have withdrawn their surface mining proposal and will not pursue it further. A large part of their decision was based on the community opposition that was building.
While we will continue to watch for future development plans of these parcels this news effectively shuts down our overall effort. We will be leaving this site up though!
We'd like to thank all of those in the community that have shown their support of this cause, if it were not for the large public outcry this would have ended very differently.
It's also important to thank the developers for listening to the community and changing course accordingly. An important consideration for future developments, please reach out to the surrounding community prior to making a large investment!

Quarry in Gilroy on Watsonville Road?
Concerned neighbors want to make sure your family is aware of a proposal making its way through the Santa Clara County Planning Department. The proposal submitted in April 2006 requests permission for a commercial surface mining operation off Watsonville & Burchell Roads in Gilroy.
This mine would excavate and distribute 200,000 - 300,000 tons of gravel /yr, putting ~10,000 trucks /yr, or 1 every 12 minutes, on Watsonville Road and Hecker Pass Highway (152). It will take an estimated 20 years to excavate the 1.7 million cubic yards of alluvial gravel planned for removal creating a 32 acre x 40 foot deep pit. All of the gravel would be processed and crushed onsite.
Community call to action!
Neighboring residents, concerned community members, business owners and others are rallying together to ensure that this proposal is not approved by county officials. This website is a part of the overall effort to block the proposal by providing the public with information about the proposal, background on relevant issues and important dates that we all need to be aware of.
