About the Group
Neighbors Against Quarry in Gilroy is a true grass roots effort formed by concerned neighbors of the proposed quarry site. The neighbors along Burchell Road have always been a very tight knit community despite the semi-rural environment. The Internet has helped to bring the community even closer together.
Even though the proposal for this quarry had been submitted in April 2006, it wasn't until mid-February 2008 that the immediate neighbors became aware of the proposal. Some of the neighbors started to observe surveying activity around the neighborhood and began to inquire about the activity. Soon it was discovered that the surveying was being done in support of the quarry proposal. It did not take long after that for this group to start ramping up activities.
The neighbors have a history of standing up for the preservation of this neighborhood. Roughly 30 years ago another quarry operation had started on Burchell Road and the neighbors were successful in stopping that activity. In fact some of the neighbors ended up purchasing the property to ensure the activity ceased.
Another significant event was the proposed golf course development on the North side of the road that would have removed one of the largest open spaces of land South of Coyote Valley.
Now with this proposal the neighborhood swings to action again in an effort to kill this proposal. The group is leveraging the power of the Internet as well as good old fashioned leg work to spread the word to all of the neighboring communities that would be impacted by this quarry.
