Neighbors Against Quarry In Gilroy

Quarry Issues

The quarry will impact the surrounding areas in many ways.  This page will attempt do describe some of these issues to provide a better understanding as to why this proposal should not be approved.

Traffic Issues

The proposal states ~10,000 trucks per year would be used to haul gravel out of the quarry.  Watsonville Road residents are already concerned about speed and traffic on this road and this will certainly make matters worse.  Additionally, these heavy trucks would cause a considerable amount of wear to this already rough road.

Trucks heading south would need to travel through the town of Gilroy to reach highway 101.  The City of Gilroy does not have an enforced truck route, which means these trucks can take any road through town to get to 101 without any repercussions.

Trucks heading north of course would run through the City of Morgan Hill, putting more traffic on Monterey Highway and Tennant Avenue.

Highway 152 over Mt Madonna, a very narrow and twisty road, does not allow large trucks, but certainly smaller loads could head west over that route.

None of these roads were designed for this additional weight or traffic.  Of course as part of the permitting process roads and highway departments are reviewing the situation.  We have not seen reviews from all neighboring cities and towns yet but we will make sure all are aware of the proposal as the County may not be required to notify all of them.
